Chairperson: Jeff Strickland
The study of history, an important part of a broad liberal education, helps to prepare students for positions with local, state or national archives, museums and historical societies or restoration agencies; and careers in teaching, law, government service, politics, journalism and creative writing, library science, and business research. Majors in history develop strong critical thinking skills, as well as research and writing skills that prospective employers desire. The department offers specialized study mainly in United States, European, African, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Latin American history. The history department faculty also teach courses in public and digital history that entail strong technical skills components. History majors may adapt their programs to meet certification requirements for teaching social studies in or elementary education in New Jersey schools. The department also offers minors in public and digital history and history.
